Small Animal Nutrition, Health & Management
Students will be working on the iCEV Small Animal Management modules, the lesson plans described below are for the Small Animal Nutrition, Health & Management module.
Goal:
To gain introductory knowledge concerning the proper care of small animals, primarily focusing on the specific diets of different species, the importance of quickly diagnosing, treating and preventing disease and how to provide the appropriate welfare to animals.
Description:
As well over half of Americans own a pet of some kind, it is important that everyone knows how to properly care for their companion, not just veterinarians. In this presentation, the student will explore the appropriate diets for different animals as well as identify the foods which should be avoided. An overview of the different digestive systems is also presented. Common diseases which affect companion animals are identified along with their symptoms, allowing for quick treatment and a more informed owner. Finally, we illustrate the responsibilities of owning a pet and highlight the different needs an owner must provide.
Objectives:
1. The student will examine the proper care of small animals.
2. The student will analyze proper small animal nutrition.
3. The student will evaluate the welfare of animals.
