Basic Avian Anatomy

Goal:

To learn the basic anatomy of avians.

Description:

In order to diagnose and treat problems which arise in birds, it is important to have an understanding of the internal composition of these animals. This presentation examines avian body systems— cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, excretory, immune, integumentary, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory and skeletal— and describes the role each plays in maintaining the health and protection of birds. The organs which comprise these systems are further explored, and human and avian skeletons are contrasted.

Objectives:

1. The student will examine avian body systems and determine the role they play in maintaining the health and protection of birds.

2. The student will determine the functions of different organs inside a bird’s body and how they relate to its welfare.
